How I Almost Died, or, The Great Blizzard of '09

And I'm not talking snow here, fair readers. I'm talking about the small Reese's peanut butter cup Blizzard from Dairy Queen that I shared with Kara on Thursday night. I decided to go ahead and eat desserts this week, to see how it felt. Well, it felt crappy! Nothing sweet that I had satisfied me. It all tasted blah. So I decided to go for the gold and try a Blizzard, a treat I only have a few times a year. After eating about 2/3, I was done. Kara and Jillian finished off the rest. We went home and I put the kids to bed. Kyle was (and still is) out of town. At about 8:30pm I noticed my stomach was hurting quite a bit, but I thought it might be heartburn. I took some Zantac and thought "Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have eaten that Blizzard." Oh how prophetic those thoughts came to be! By 10:30pm I was in quite a bit of pain. My stomach felt all distended, and I decided to pop another Zantac and go to bed. I think I might have actually fallen asleep, but not for long! At about midnight I was woken up with severe pains all across my stomach and back. To spare you all the details of my night-long saga, let's just say I tried:

making myself throw up (I have no future as a bulimic)
pacing the floor
breathing a million different ways
massaging my back and stomach
lying in the fetal position
lying on my back
lying every which way
taking more Zantac
praying vigorously

If Kyle were home I would have sent him to the store for some OTC medicine. But he wasn't, so I was stuck. Finally, at about 2:30am, I looked up some home remedies for stomach pain on the internet. I figured my belly was full of air that was having a hard time dispelling itself. The 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in 4 oz. of warm water tasted pretty bad, but actually worked. I was able to sleep for a couple of hours until I had to take some more.

It was a miserable night, to say the least! Quite painful, too. Definitely not worth the Blizzard. My sister the dietitian thinks I may have had a gallbladder attack. Because I hadn't been eating a lot of fat or sugar, my system had a hard time digesting the fat in the ice cream. Let's just say I won't be visiting my local DQ anytime soon. And now I'm kind of afraid to eat anything like that! My dessert days may be over. At least any kind of overindulgence anyway. I hope I don't lose my tolerance for dark chocolate.

I'm glad I'm alive to tell this tale. I ran 7 of my 8 miles the next morning, but my stomach complained the whole time. Luckily, I'm feeling better today. Beware of Blizzards!

Meet Malia!

Here's my newest niece. She arrived quickly this morning. I missed her birth by about 6 minutes. I got to do the fun stuff though, holding and oohing and ahhing. Shauna did all the work -- sans any drugs. What an appropriate use of sans! She looked great after her speedy 6 hour labor. Thanks for letting me be there, guys. It was so fun and special. Malia is a very cute baby. I can't wait to see her again. Being an aunt is great! And being in a delivery room without having to deliver a baby is even better. Though it did make me a bit baby hungry . . . I'll try to get over that!

Congratulations to Shauna, Jonas, and Kjersten. I love you and am soooo happy that Malia arrived safely and on her due date.

My Own Inaguration

Missing: A brand spankin' new Cadillac limo with 5 inch glass and armored doors.

Missing: A ball where I got to hob nob with politicians, celebrities, and heads of state.

Missing: All day coverage on every major news network.

Missing: A parade.

Missing: 2 million people in attendance.

So, no, my inauguration as the new Young Women's President in our ward wasn't quite the spectacle that President Obama's was, but we do share the same title. And I don't have to deal with national debt, terrorism threats, lobbyists, pork barrel spending, balancing a budget ($800 billion bailout what????), or having people watch my every move. And technically, I wasn't really inaugurated. Just sustained. But that's enough for me. Wish me luck!

A new visitor

These notes were found by the children on their beds today. It seems we have a new fairy in the house, and she likes things clean. Subtle, yet effective.

Dearest Darlingest Jillian,
I was so pleased by your clean room yesterday. Your dolls look so sweet at their tiny tea table. I was tempted to sit down myself. Your closet shows great improvement, although a little more work may be necessary to truly have a clean room. Imagine my surprise upon arriving to sit at your cute little vanity and fluff my wings. Your room was in a hideous state of uproar! The bed, so soft and comfortable in its pale blue, was unmade. Your pajamas were scattered willy-nilly about the floor. And then I found your dirty clothes from yesterday. I gasped in horror! My dear, sweet, capable, clean girl: please clean your room at once. I shudder to think what your mother would say should she happen upon this mess. I shall leave a chocolate next time, my dear, if I find your room clean.
Your friend in cleanliness,
The Clean Room Fairy

Master Hayden,
Once again, a ship shape room, my friend. You are to be congratulated. However, what in the world occurred in your closet? It looks as if the Legos had a major accident. They are cascading off the shelf on to the floor in a most shocking manner. Please clean them up before I come again. You may need to ask your handsome father or beautiful and talented mother for assistance. I shall leave a chocolate on your pillow if, upon my return, the closet is clean. Ta ta for now!
Yours in clutterless living,
The Clean Room Fairy

Niblets

You know, like the frozen corn from Green Giant. It's just a few nibbles of veggie news.

I totally ate like 4 brownies tonight. Triple chocolate with mint icing. Irresistible. But I'm going to keep off the no treat thing until Feb. 2nd. I just had a little "oops", that's all. Okay, a big oops. And now I have a stomachache.

Our family is doing something kinda cool I thought I'd share. We have a goal to do a service project every month. In November we helped plant trees in our park. In December (on Christmas day) we went to a senior citizen dinner and helped clean up. My sis Shauna organized that one. I was really inspired by these things, so now I'm trying to help my kids learn the value of service in the community. This month we made cards and went and visited some sick older people that we know. Throughout the year we're going to do things like garbage clean up around the park, yard work for the same elderly couple, food or clothing drives, etc. I hope to find some good resources for family service. Any ideas?

Kyle's boss is the coolest. Not only did he give us his tickets for the musical "Annie" this weekend ($45 each!), he is also so respectful of our religion and practices. Recruiting season is coming up, and it is expected that each faculty member take the interviewees out to dinner. These events will be on Monday and Thursday evenings. Kyle's boss came into his office to make sure it Kyle could attend some of the Monday dinners. He said something like "I know Monday is a day you try to be home with your family, so I wanted to make sure you are okay with hosting a couple of dinners. Will that work out?" How cool is that? He's a really great guy, and I appreciate him.

I am making a quilt for my sister Shauna, who's baby is due on the 27th of this month, and it's actually turning out! I'm excited for that, because I don't have my wise quilting friends from Michigan to help me out. I've found some new quiliting friends, but they don't live as close. Shauna's also said that I can attend the birth and help her, so I'm hoping it works out. Kyle's going out of town the weekend the baby's due, which could be a problem. But I am so excited to be there when the little guy or girl is born. I hope it happens! Hang in there, Shauna!

Well, that's it. Until next time . . . watch out for those brownies!

Thursday Thoughts

1. Jello brand sugar free pudding (double chocolate) tastes soooo much better than Handi-Snacks brand. So even if Jello brand is more expensive, you should go for it. Because if you're two weeks into no desserts like me, taste is everything. And also, if you haven't eaten dessert for two weeks and you also haven't lost one pound, you may be considering eating some dessert. But then you'll be feeling stubborn, like you should hold out for at least a month. But then you'll think of your dark chocolate stash. And then you'll decide to just take it one day at a time. My cheat for the week: 1/2 of an orange stick. They were from Christmas and I never had one and they were almost gone. And I don't feel guilty.

2. Kara's destined to be the best cable repair person ever. I hope she resembles Charlize Theron in "The Italian Job" and not Larry the cable guy. Her new love is Elmo, or Sesame Street, and she has learned how to turn the TV on in my room. No problem, since you also have to turn on the satellite box. Which she now can do. No problem, since the TV has to be on channel 4, so just move the TV to channel 6 or so before you turn it off. Nope, she solved that one too. She walks into my room at all times of the day, says "Elmo", and turns on everything she needs to watch a show. And she can also turn off the Wii (if everyone's playing Mario Kart and ignoring her), eject the disc, and take control of a Wii game by using another remote, and record things on the DVR. She once recorded a whole series of some boring show on PBS. Both Kyle and I were thinking the other person had recorded it. Finally I asked him "Why did you record this? Are you ever going to watch it?" We laughed when we realized who the culprit was! Look out, MIT, we've got your next tech genius. Probably it's all luck, right?

3. I think I'm actually going to be able to grow my hair out past the A-line, stacked bob thing I've had for over a year. Yes! It's finally looking a little longer. This spring (I'm thinking late April) I might actually be able to wear a ponytail. Hurrah!

4. I've decided to run another marathon. Meet me in Newport, OR, on May 30th if you're interested. Should be fun! Training starts January 26th and I'm certain it won't be 8 degrees and snowing like it was last year when I started.

5. My kids' new bus driver must think I'm a neglectful mother. Hayden always gets off the bus with Jillian after school, and then they walk the 50 yards home. I sometimes go out to greet them, but I'm usually trying to finish something up while Kara is napping. Well, on Tuesdays for the last two months Jillian's been staying after school for Spanish club. This means Hayden has to ride home alone. I would make the effort to go and meet the bus, but not always, and I wasn't always waiting right at the bus stop. I didn't think much of it until this Tuesday, when I went out to meet Hayden. The bus wasn't there but the kids were off. I was pondering what this meant when I saw the bus come around the corner again. The bus stopped, the driver waved me over, and then kind of chewed me out and told me how upset Hayden was that I wasn't there and she wouldn't let him off of the bus. I told her this was all news to me. She said it was district policy. I thought in my head "Then you should have told the other bus driver that." Then, on Wednesday morning, Jillian went out the door to catch the bus that comes at 7:30. Apparently it was already there, even though it was only 7:27. Now she insists that she has to leave the house at 7:22 because the bus driver told her to be there 5 minutes early and that she couldn't run to catch the bus. Whatever! I'm pretty sure there's no district policy about running. Safety, I know. Now I've got to show my good Mom side so I don't get in any more trouble!

Hope everyone else is having a good week. Can't believe the weekend is almost here!

I'm almost 32 . . .

So I'm trying to start looking the part. I'm slowly (emphasis on SLOWLY) trying to revamp my wardrobe with pieces I really really really like and will wear a lot. And that cost more that $6 and didn't all come from a clearance rack at Target. Not that that's a bad thing, because I am a big fan of Target. But not for my whole wardrobe. Right now I look at my closet and sigh. Very few things I want to wear. But I'm working on it -- both liking the body that must wear the clothes and the clothes themselves. After 4 years of a Columbia ski jacket as my main winter wear (very useful in Michigan), I bought a cute wool tweed coat after Christmas. It's just a tad big, so if I ever get around to it, I may have it altered. You can't tell from the picture, but it has small flecks of green and orange in it (my faves!) that match the darling hat and scarf my friend Kelli crocheted for my birthday last year. I am so lucky!

I also got a cool, special bracelet for Christmas from Kyle (well, he agreed to it, but I did all the selecting, ordering, etc.). I'm so happy to have an original Angela Henrie piece. I love the idea of jewelry that represents motherhood, but I'm not so keen on most of the pieces out there. So I came up with this one. I am so so sorry that the pictures do not do it justice. If possible, our camera seems to be getting worse every time we use it. Let's hope the tax refund can buy us a new one! Angela is a silversmith and made the links with the kids' names on them by hand. I love it and wear it almost every day.

After 8 days of no dessert I am doing pretty well. It has been hard, though, and I did sneak the smallest corner of the cookie bars I made the other day. But today, when Jillian was eating fudgey moose tracks ice cream right in front of me, I just grabbed a sugar-free pudding (I don't have one every day, though) and ignored her. I'm trying to avoid substitutes like diet soda and sugar-free ice cream, etc. So far pretty good. We'll see how long it lasts! I am definitely not craving fudge anymore. I also didn't want a bit of the disgusting Sara Lee cherry pie that Kyle bought and baked tonight. Ew.

Kyle started teaching this week and survived. Now he has to navigate several emails a day from students. Most of them read something like this:

Dear Mr. ________,

I went online to take quiz #1, but somehow I submitted it to you without any of the answers. Can you open the quiz for me again so I can do it over? I promise not to make a mistake again.

Dear Mr. ________,

I'm sorry I didn't come to class at all this week or take the quiz. Can you give me a free pass for this one? I will come next week.

Good luck, Kyle! Hope the quarter goes by quickly. And you should totally make them call you Dr. You earned it!

Happy weekend.

Holiday Highlights -- In photos

My comments may be in the wrong order, but here they are:

Tired cousins (they're TOTALLY faking!)

Me and my sisters -- both prego

Crazy Uncle Wayne playing "Wits and Wagers"

Some "Asian" relatives that came to visit.

Swimming day (Too bad it wasn't the Kalahari.)

Hayden wearing his AUTHENTIC Indiana Jones hat from Uncle Joel while playing "Who, What, Where" the funniest drawing game ever.

Whee! Santa brought a Wii! We pretty much didn't leave the house all vacation.

Kara, the cutest Santa. She did the "Ho Ho Ho" all week. Love it!

Sunday Snippets

Yeah, I realize I still have a Christmas background on my blog. I'm a bit behind. No resolutions made, no burst of energy, and the Christmas tree still stands in the living room (sans ornaments but avec lights). It's looking good, so we're leaving it up a few more days. Or that's the excuse Kyle gives me. He says it might last until the end of the month. Anyway, I'm almost done cleaning up after company, and I've almost recovered. Hostessing makes one tired, I've discovered. Even if said hostess gig doesn't seem too strenuous, due to good guests. Anyhoo, here's a bit of what's been going on.

1. Should I be worried that I had a dream I was pregnant with twins on Friday night and then SAW at least three sets of twins the following day? I think I also had an episode of phantom morning sickness brought on by sugar withdrawal symptoms. Frightening!

2. Speaking of sugar withdrawal symptoms, I made it through three days of no treats. My internal fudge alarm is still going off, but getting fainter every day. For my snack tonight, I had a delightful little all-natural fruit leather, some all-natural popcorn, and some mostly-natural lemon-flavored water. Mmm. I feel satisfied. Here's hoping I can last more than a week!

3. I need a new scale. I used to weigh the same at least 20 days of the month -- 128.5. Then one day I weighed 132. Not one to panic about my weight (ha ha), I weighed myself again. 136. Again. 3.5. Hmm, peculiar. Now when I get on the scale I weigh anywhere from 3.5 pounds (the weight of my left forearm), to 140 pounds. This is not acceptable! Especially since my nine-months pregnant sister weighs about 140 pounds.

4. Which brings me to the one resolution I'm willing to make: GETTING OVER my body image issues. I am soliciting ideas on how to do so. Maybe I need to get Dr. Phil or Oprah involved. Definitely not Rachel Ray or Rosie O'Donnell. Not really Dr. Phil either. Just Oprah. Or Stacy and Clinton from What No To Wear. I'm sure $5,000 of new clothes would help me feel better about myself.

5. Kyle starts teaching tomorrow. It's time for me to step up to the plate and do the single mom thing for a bit. He's got three conferences in January and February too, so he'll be busy. I think he'll do a great job teaching, though, and I'm glad he has a job he likes!

6. The cal-king bed that was stuck in the Seattle snowstorm was successfully set up in our spacious bedroom. It is scrumptious. I have yet to come across Kyle's lanky limbs while sleeping. I do think it needs one thing, though, a nice fluffy pillowtop. We'll see if I can talk Mr. Extra Firm into it.

7. Last one, I promise. I apparently hit the sit-ups a bit hard on my first workout of the new year. My abs have not been this sore in a long time. I think I can try to do some again tomorrow. Here's to a strong core!

Christmas pics to come! Happy New Year!
